The title Restoration reflects the fruitful collaboration between the Italian viola d’amore player Marco Fusi and the four Scandinavian composers Ylva Lund Bergner, Øyvind Mæland, Axel Rudebeck and Johan Svensson. They first got together for a workshop in Gothenburg autumn 2014. During concert tour in 2015, where the new pieces were premiered in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Italy, the idea came up to make an album with the same material.

One of the concerts in Sweden was organized by the Gothenburg based new music promoter GEIGER, who enthusiastically offered to release the forthcoming recording on GEIGER Grammfon. Said and done, a year later this exclusive collaboration with 21th century compositions for the lovable viola d’amore is ready to meet new listeners around the world.

Marco Fusi:
Marco Fusi is a violinist and composer. He has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös and Alan Gilbert and collaborated with Klangforum Wien, MusikFabrik, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Linea and more. Fusi’s complete recording of John Cage’s ”Freeman Etudes” was released in 2011.

About the voila d'amore:
A member of the viol family, the viola d’amore has four to seven playing strings and in most cases sympathetic strings. The sympathetic strings matches the playing strings in number and resonate with the played notes. The instrument had its glory days in the late 17th century with pieces written for it by composers like Vivaldi, Biber and Bach. It was brought to attention again in the 20th century, and has got some interest in recent years. With no standardized tuning, the viola d’amore is a fascinating instrument to work with for both composers and performers.
